New Addition to the Family & Festa da Espiga

01 June 2026 · Ismael Saywell

I promise future updates will be more informative – however, for my first, I want to give you an insight into what happens behind the desk by introducing a new addition to the Saywell family: Sukuna (The King of Curses)!

While taking a lunchtime stroll near the office in April, I spotted a scared little dog shaking in the bushes, behind some bins. It was obvious that he wasn't a street dog and had been recently abandoned – and without a second of thought or planning, my mind was set, he would be coming home with me (even though I'm allergic!).

After bribing him back to the office with food and affection, I took him to the vet to check for a microchip.

Rather selfishly, I was pleased that there was no chip, so I could make him mine by getting him tested, vaccinated and legalised with his very own passport – so he can join me on my regular trips back to the UK.

Unfortunately, he tested positive for heartworm (negative for Leishmaniasis though!), so he has to limit his exercise and take some nasty medication for the next few months, but he'll be back to 100% in no time.

Things aren't all bad – he now has his own tailored meal plan (he's currently bulking to add some weight!), personalised collar, cozy den in the corner of my wardrobe, and ambient music playing while I'm at work. Though, I really think I made a major error by letting him onto the bed one night...

On the Portugal side of things, I recently attended the Festa da Espiga (an Ascension Day tradition in Salir). I can't say for sure what it was about (Wheat I think?) but the vibe and turnout was great. Definitely one for you to check out next year!

If you have any dog care tips or just want to share a photo of your own pets, I'd love to hear them!
